a memorial continues to grow at police department. cornell? >> good morning, santa cruz police officers returned to work today after taking a day of mourning. the sheriff deputy has been patrolling on their half. a memorial continues to grow at santa cruz police headquarters. people continue to bring flowers, candles and cards, a fitting tribute to two police officers killed if the lynn -- line of duty. an outpouring of emotion as the community came together to mount, to share thoughts prayers about two courageous police officers, the two were ambushed and accused by a man of accused of sexual assault. we showed you the scene, a fire truck responding for the call and the shooter goulet returned

to the scene and fired at officers. the firefighters shielded a woman on the ground. the firefighter who did this heroic act did itselflessry to -- itself, selflessly to protect them. unfortunately, the officers lost their lives, they were doing their job. they are the heroes. >> we have learned chilling details about the 35-year-old suspect. he wore body armor. he fired on the officers when they came to his home. he took their guns and stole sergeant baker's car. he would later be killed in a gunfight with police. a news conference is scheduled for later this morning, a public memorial to the slain officers is now being planned in the city live in santa cruz for abc7 news. >> stay us with for continuing coverage of the santa cruz officers' murders with updates

earmarked for california. the white house says 64,000 civilian defense workers could be furloughed and an economist in los angeles says 175,000 nondefense jobs could be at risk schools in california could lose billions in research funding and less student aid and up to 400,000 in california could lose 10 percent of their extended unemployment benefits but this morning, president obama is backing off the most severe warn ing. >> this is not a cliff. it is a tumble down. a lot of people may not notice the full impact. this is going to be a big hit on the economy. >> the senate could vote tomorrow on plans to avoid the tumble down. but officials say the current plan has no chance of passing. the top four congressional leaders, speaker boehner, harry reid, and nancy pelosi and

any radar runs right now. here is a look at what is going on across the country if you are headed to the north, you can see rain in the higher elevation snow and to the east it is both of the corners that have winter weather right now. it doesn't lock too heavy in either instance compared to what we have been dealing with the last couple of days. to our roof camera, san francisco is 49 right now along with half moon bay, and we have 48 in san brew me and redwood city is 47 and as we look at the east bay you can see 24 right here headed back to this area and oakland is 48 and richmond and 46 at walnut creek and antioch at 49 and union city at 45. 280 in the south bay and 17, san jose at 44, cupertino, 41 and friend in mountain view and gilroy is 38, the cool spot. from mount tamalpais to the south we are mainly in the

mid-to-upper 40's with santa rosa 43 and napa at 47. now, what will happen in the forecast cycle, it becomes sunny and warmer, so sprinkles are possible saturday night and our best chance of rain, though, is wednesday. two areas of high pressure dominating our weather putting up a huge roadblock with high clouds overriding it and you can see it is pushing the warmer weather up to the north and it will wrap that warmer weather without the clouds into our neighborhood today and tomorrow. in santa clara valley upper 60's to low 70's, an the boardwalk, 7 3. millbrae is the cool spot at mid-to-upper 60's. and low-to-mid 60's downtown south san francisco and sausalito, and up more 60's to low 70's through the north bay valley and the beach is not so breezy as yesterday, mid-to-upper 50's from 65 to 68 along the east bay shore with oak and fremont the warm spots

in will be new information on the gun battle that claims the lives of two veteran police officers. cornell bernard is live outside the santa cruz police department. >> santa cruz police officers returning to work this morning after taking a day of mourning, and the sheriff has been patrolling on their behalf, and right now, look at this, a moving tribute continues to to to grow. people are bringing candles and cards a fitting tribute to two police officers killed in a line of duty. the community came together as one to mourn and share thoughts and prayers of the two courageous police officers, detective sergeant butch baker and detective elizabeth butler, ambushed and killed by suspect goulet on tuesday. the tragedy has torn this community apart and many say the officers bravery will never be forgotten.
